Welcome to the crayon box! What color are you?
One of my goals this year is to get over my fear of color. I tend to work in an earthy and dark palette. I love mixing coppers and steel grays. I have oodles of cranberry pearls and bronzite in every shape imaginable.
It is not that I can't design in color. I do. My clients demand it. The seasons dictate it. But when left to my own devices I tend to reach for the Burnt Sienna and Crimson and Midnight Blue instead of the Spring Green and Magenta and Dandelion.
So this year I have decided that I need to check my color baggage at the door and let the whole Crayola® box come spilling forth.
I actually have a lot of bright colored art beads in my stash. I buy them, then they sit there because I am perplexed as to where to take them. But I should just let them lead me and I will follow.
Colors evoke moods {like how sexy I used to feel in my candy apple red Fiero circa 1987} and feelings {like the emerald green envy I feel when I visit my sister's perfectly ordered and spotless home - of course, she doesn't have a full time job and a 9p-midnight passion} and states of mind {as in the tornado of gray that swirls around my head when I can't find something that I need RIGHT NOW!}. Colors transport you to a place {like the color of the Pacific at sunset on a cliff in San Francisco} and recall memories {like the vibrant red-white-blue plaid of my polyester Easter dress handmade for me by my beloved Aunt Char in 1976}.
I came across a time waster today, but a fun one! True Value Paint has a little quiz to pinpoint exactly what color you are.

Here is what my answers decided:
Black is your color
Nothing can stand between you and your demand for a calm environment. To be free of conflict and disagreement is the only way to live. In fact, it’s this philosophy that probably allows you to be comfortable in conditions that would normally bother others. Your ability to focus is undisputed, and while you enjoy attention, you still have problems understanding how to handle it. No other color lives by the golden rule as much as you do.
So much for my attempt to live in color.
How could it know that black really is my favorite color? {And I have six pairs of pants, 12 tops, four dresses and more shoes than I can count in black. What? It goes with everything!}
What is your favorite color?
Take the test and come back and tell me if you think that it picked the right one for you.

Enjoy the day!
Erin,I have to say that my color is Black, too! well (the only shoe color I buy). I thought that I would be more soft aqua.
ReplyDeleteI still refer to my 64 color box of crayolas when describing something...is it more orange-red or red-orange. And nothing beats the smell of a new box of Crayolas--except maybe a new can of Play-do!
Bead Happy!
Michelle
HI Erin,
ReplyDeleteI also have a fear of color. If I could make everything in green and brown I would be a happy girl. I guess my color is green. I bought Margie Deeb's "The Beader's Guide To Color" - it is a wonderful book. She explains color theory and design and gives examples of theory-based color schemes. I also make myself use a color wheel when I bead. I have found this helps tremendously.
black is also my go to color...I color up with scarfs and pashminas...
ReplyDeleteHmmm Quiz said I was yellow or red (I couldn't make up my mind on a few questions.) I would have pegged myself for a green or blue girl....Who knew?!?
ReplyDeleteTook the test - BLACK. What else? - I think I beat you in the number of pieces I own in black! It is just the perfect backdrop to showcasing my jewelry.
ReplyDeleteAs far as designing, I use a lot of black with brighter colors - red/turquoise are my favs. I dislike orange so much I just avoid it.
One of my favorite lampwork artists told me that she doesn't follow color trends and makes what feels good to her with the understanding that some customers won't like her color choices.
I feel the same way; I've got to like handling the color or I can't design - silly as it sounds. So don't beat yourself up. As an artist you have to feel what is good for YOU.
Oh - those crayola colors - why didn't they have all those luscious colors when I was growing up?
PS - Margie's color book IS great.
Hi again - I just sent you a reply to your email. I just wanted to make sure I had the right address.
ReplyDeletehuh. well per the quiz, yellow is my color (because i'm a "powerful thinker"--ha! it's true I do tend to think my way through obstacles.) yellow isn't my favorite color, but i do prefer warmer colors. interestingly, i took the Dewey Color Quiz and it told me my optimal profession was "creator." I do indeed feel lately that I am on the right track with that. and I DO love black too!! I find it restful and clean. And I'm with you, I'm drawn to muted colors, not so much the bright ones. keep buying them and then have no idea what to do with them! I've sort of come to terms with that. but i do want to use up those dang bright beads. thanks for sharing this--it was fun!!!
ReplyDeletefor my wardrobe, black is definitely my fav color. as i sit here, i'm wearing black pants and a grey converse t-shirt with a big black converse hi top print :)
ReplyDeletein my crafting i luv blues and greys. oh, what to do, what to do?
My color is RED!
ReplyDelete"You boast incredible willpower and are capable of overcoming obstacles that would normally leave others shaking in their boots. You have a penchant for colorful environments and often impress others with your energetic bursts of energy. Your interests in many areas of life often leave you scattered, but when you focus you can accomplish anything you put your mind to."
I don't know about the whole 'incredible willpower' thing, though. Otherwise I'd have to say it's fairly accurate. Even better, I took the Dewey color quiz and it pegged me as a CREATOR. Good to know, since I see myself that way anyway! :D
Now that was interesting with a capital I.
ReplyDeleteI'm a yellow,but I don't see myself as a powerful thinker.
So, the interesting question to pose is: am I really a yellow, or am I really a positive thinker? Which one don't I know yet? And maybe it's time to reassess and challenge the old views?
Like I said, very interesting....THANK YOU!
Hi Erin,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun post! I guess the important thing is to go with what inspires you, and if black is it, so what?
The first link to the quiz (at True Value Paint?) didn't work for me, but the second one did. Was I supposed to end up at a careerpath.com site? lol. But guess what? Here's my test results:
You're a CREATOR (NO!)
Keywords
Nonconforming, Impulsive, Expressive, Romantic, Intuitive, Sensitive, and Emotional
Shocking results! Mostly I leaned toward purples and blues.
I couldn't figure out how to get it to tell me my color but I took some other test and it said I was a Creator!
ReplyDeleteSpooky!
ReplyDelete"Green is your color!
To say that you’re determined would be an understatement. Luckily, no one can be intimidated by your intensity, because you camouflage it behind a very easy-going demeanor. Your knack for being original probably has a lot to do with your love for art. A hard worker by nature, Green people also enjoy relaxing and enjoying life."
I gotta work harder on that very last part. But I do try to create an environment to de-stress.
Green has always been my color since childhood. I have added to this periwinkle blue but green has always been an all time favorite and Spring my fav time of year with all it's wonderful fresh greens.
I am surprised how with those few questions it determined that, how did it know I have green eyes? :) I would love to see how they process the info, but then I clicked first on the last link and got another test that used color to determine my 'Best Occupational Category -You're a RESEARCHER'
Surprise! Yes that is the other half of my brain that must have taken that test. Other tests I've taken tell me I use both sides of my brain equally (when it's working!) so that makes me pretty complex at times, not to mention an INFJ.
Thanks for the fun Erin~! I am going to be sending you some color soon!~ :)
This is a great goal. I've always had trouble with color when it comes to art, as well.
ReplyDeleteWeeeelll. The quiz said that "red" is my colour. Actually, it's probably the colour I like least, especially if it's bright and flashy - I really wouldn't ever wear that. I prefer black, grey and blue. The character description also could hardly have been further from the truth.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny that your color came out black! : )
ReplyDeleteI took the quiz and my color is red. I wouldn't have guessed that color, but the description fit me to a T! My favorite color is turquoise. Red and turquoise look good together though! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLisa
Hi Erin, my color is RED. ^___^
ReplyDeleteThat's great, because it's really the color I like most. And the description fits very well, too. :)
